CURTAINS AND SHEERS
My favourite of all the window furnishings. Sheers can totally transform a room to create a beautiful aesthetic whilst also providing amazing thermal benefits.
But choosing the right components to best suit your style, budget and functionality, can be overwhelming.
But, don't worry, I can help you work through the following considerations:
Balancing privacy and aesthetics
Do you need total privacy from the neighbours? Are you just trying to soften the room? You might be aiming for a combination of both. We can assist you in answering these queries, and provide diverse options to achieve your outcome.
Thermal performance
Thermal curtains can reduce heat loss from windows by as much as 25 percent and protect your furniture and artworks from the intense Australian sun. Furthermore, they serve as a barrier against cold drafts, keeping your home cosy throughout the winter months.
Optimal stacking method
Do you know how to stack your curtains? Talk to us about what works best depending on the type of window or door you have, and how to keep your views. Consider whether you want the curtains to help frame, or stack off the window.
*Please note S-Fold curtains require a bigger stack-back than all the other styles. Ask us to calculate how much stack-back you will need.
WHICH FABRIC?
This is the part I absolutely love when it comes to guiding you through your curtain choices! Yet, I understand it might also stir up some feelings of apprehension. With my extensive two decades of experience dealing with a wide array of fabric types and variations, I'm perfectly positioned to assist you in finding the ideal fabric.
The level of natural light your window receives plays a crucial role in determining the best construction for your curtains. In cases where your window basks in full summer sunlight, I'd be more inclined to suggest a man-made fibre that can handle the heat and won't lose its colour.
The world of textures, colours, and printed fabrics offers a multitude of options, and I'm thrilled to provide recommendations. All it takes is booking an appointment, and I'll be right there to guide you in discovering the perfect fit!
WHICH HEADING?
Selecting the perfect heading style is all about how the fabric is sewn or pleated at the top of the curtain. This choice significantly influences the way the fabric drapes or hangs and even affects functional aspects like stack back (the space a curtain occupies when fully drawn open).
S Fold (Pictured), Ripple, or Wave Fold
The S fold, also known as ripple or wave fold, exudes modern charm. Its clean lines offer a simple yet sophisticated appearance, making it an excellent match for solid, patterned, and sheer fabrics alike. A special tape is seamlessly attached to the fabric, creating a symmetrical wave-like arrangement. It's important to note that due to the mechanics of the S fold, it requires the most space for stack back—approximately 20-25% of the track width—depending on the chosen fabric.
Inverted Box Pleat
For those who adore classic aesthetics, the inverted box pleat is a fantastic choice. This heading style generates an elegant and tailored look. Deeply inverted pleats run across the curtain's top, forming a flat heading that gracefully rests beneath a curtain rod or on a track.
Knife Pleat (Pictured behind the S-Fold)
Embracing small-sized pleats, the knife pleat offers a tightly gathered header. This heading style sits exceptionally close and flat to the window, making it perfect for situations where the lining needs to snugly align with the window. Additionally, the stack of the knife pleat boasts its own appeal, as it generally occupies only 10-15% of the track length.
Pinch Pleat
The pinch pleat creates a classic look. Pleats are artfully formed through folded creases in the stiff buckram inserted within the header. The pinch pleat family encompasses three variations—single, double, and triple—with each distinguished by the number of fold creases at the top. Variations also affect the fullness, stack back, and overall visual effect.

CHOOSING THE PERFECT CURTAIN TRACK PLACEMENT
Discovering the ideal location to attach the track involves considering a variety of factors, each contributing to the overall charm of your space.
Here are a few pointers when assessing your space.
-
Cornices or No Cornices: Are cornices part of your ceiling architecture?
-
Square Set Ceiling: Does your ceiling feature a square-set design?
-
Traditional or Modern Aesthetic: Is your home more inclined towards a traditional or modern style?
-
Design Lines in the Room: Are there other design elements that play a role in your room?
-
Formal or Casual Look: Are you leaning towards a formal ambiance or a more relaxed, casual feel?
Rest assured, I'm here to help you navigate these questions and provide guidance to achieve the desired look you have in mind.
SELECTING THE RIGHT CURTAIN LENGTH
When it comes to curtain length, you have three primary options to consider:
-
Off the Floor: Ideal for those who favour a streamlined appearance, keeping curtains clear of cleaning and door-opening hassle.
-
Just Touching: This choice introduces a relaxed feel, although it does require more attention to maintaining clean floors and curtains.
-
Puddling: Embrace the most romantic and dramatic option—puddling, where the fabric cascades onto the floor. Puddling works wonders with luxury fabrics like linen, allowing the material to naturally adapt without noticeable changes.
I understand that these factors might appear overwhelming, but remember, I'm here to provide assistance and advice every step of the way. Your journey to the perfect curtain setup is my joy and priority. Feel free to reach out anytime; I'm here for you!
